What My Web Design Process Looks Like

In the last few weeks, I’ve had a few new projects that I have been really excited to sink my teeth into. I have been making a website for a waxing studio, a business and life coach, and a person who offers beautiful ceramic incense and herb burners. They’re all in different stages of progress and a treat to work on.

This has also given me a chance to work a bit more on my web design process and general workflow. I wanted to write up this post to give you all an insight into how I’ve been refining my process as well!

1.) Initial meeting & planning

First, I try to schedule a meeting with my clients after we decide to work on the website to figure out everything that needs to actually be included on the site and what the focus will be. This is a really important part of the whole process and if we miss out on making a concrete plan here, it really messes with all the following work.

It really helped me to create a document of everything that I need to know about the website before I start designing the structure and visuals for it and go through that document at our meeting. Proper planning prevents poor performance.

2.) Designing the structure & visuals

At this point, I like to sketch the site out on a piece of paper to get the overall structure down. This always comes before making the actual design and visuals because deciding on the structure really sets the foundation down for the site.

Afterwards, I actually sit down to make the actual design. I chat with my client a bit about whether they have any preferences for the visual look of the site, and I make the design for each of the pages. We go back and forth a little on the edits until we’re both satisfied with the structure and how everything looks. Although we don’t need to have all the text ready for the website yet, I still try to have the main headings ready.

3.) Building the website

This is the point at which I bring out the music albums to play them on loop and sit down to actually build the website. This can either take a week or a bit less than a month depending on how complex the website is.

For the most part, I use placeholders on all the text except for the headings. My client starts to send me their photographs for the website at this point, and I use them to fill out the site.

4.) Writing the texts

I can’t really be an expert in everybody’s business, so the job of writing the website copy falls on the business owners. For many people, this is not a very easy task so to make the whole process smoother, I have been trying to set up 1 hour meetings in which we both sit together on a call and work on the texts.

This helps with focusing while writing and definitely speeds up the communication. We can do the edits right on the spot instead of stretching the whole thing over days on end.

5.) Finishing the website

At this point, we look the whole website over for mistakes or anything that’s been missed. Preferably, some other people look it over as well before it’s published for an extra opinion. When it’s done, I connect the domain and publish the whole website.
